Indonesia’s Postal Service Introduces NFT Stamps with “Cenderawasih” Theme

Pos Indonesia, the state-owned postal service of Indonesia, has launched its first-ever postage stamp with a non-fungible token (NFT) counterpart. The newly unveiled stamp features “Cenderawasih,” the bird of paradise, and offers both a physical and digital version, aiming to merge traditional postage with blockchain technology.

Announced through the company’s Instagram page, the NFT stamps will be released as part of a collectible booklet, blending cultural heritage with modern technological advancements. Pos Indonesia believes that this combination of tradition and innovation will appeal to both stamp collectors and NFT enthusiasts alike.

This launch aligns with Indonesia’s broader interest in Web3 technology. Earlier this year, Indonesian financial authorities announced plans to establish a regulatory sandbox for crypto assets by 2025, in an effort to curb fraud in the growing digital space.

Pos Indonesia’s NFT stamps enter the market during a challenging period for digital collectibles. According to CryptoSlam data, NFT sales volume in September hit a low not seen since January 2021, with monthly volume reaching $296 million—a significant 81% drop from the peak of $1.6 billion in March. Transaction numbers also declined, from 7.3 million in August to 4.9 million in September.

Despite the declining NFT market, Indonesia’s postal service sees potential in the fusion of NFTs with traditional collectibles. The move mirrors similar efforts by postal services in other countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, Austria, and the Netherlands, which have all experimented with NFT stamps in recent years. For instance, in 2022, the UAE launched a gold-infused postage stamp accompanied by an NFT counterpart to commemorate its 50th anniversary.10:03 AM
